I always wondered what that smoke thing was since unlike the corrupted gems it was never explained, but considering it didn't try to possess any of the gems would eating it have been able to contain or destroy it? at the very least I can see steven holding it in until he could barf it into the evil destroying flames... missed opportunites but probably for the best
