I can't remember where this was said, but apparently a tweet or comment from one of the creators explained the scroll. The paint used in it was made our of crushed up gem shards.
Even after being shattered, crushed up, and made into paint, those gems are still partially conscious and alive... Remember when this show was happy? Neither do I.
