Stalactite. It has a c for ceiling in it.
That's just how I remember the spelling, though. For which is which I use Scott Adams's mnemonic: "Stalagmites might hang from the ceiling, but they don't." Yes I'm aware it's confusing, but it works for me. :P
Fixed.

It's S-T-A-L-A-C-T-I-T-E. With a c. StalaGmite for the Ground; stalaCtite for the ceiling. I don't know why this annoys me... but it does. Also Jake gets it wrong in the last panel too. Can happen to anyone.
Fixed, and no real need to try and figure out why. Everyone has their pet peeves.

Hey, I beat someone to the punch on something!
Now I'm wondering about the etymology of those two words.
The real question is why there aren't sibling rock formation gems named Stalactite and Stalagmite. I'd wanna meet them!
And have them beat up Steven.
That is an excellent question.

Nothing to say again.
Edited to alleviate a spelling error pointed out to me by Needling Haystacks, and another error pointed out to me by Stephen.
