Not to nitpick, but we know several harder materials than corundum, including boron, silicon carbide, and titanium carbide.

They did specify minerals, but that only excludes TiCarbide, as I don't think that occurs naturally (or at least not in big enough chunks). Chalk it up to Marceline not knowing her geology/earth science.
