If you are talking about the .hack games, then hell yeah I remember them. I played the originals, G.U. (my favourite ones) and Link. Too bad the series is dead, for me they were the best "serious digital MMO" story to date. Would like to get my hands on a translated version of the last movie.

Pretty much. The animes are support lore for the games, so if you don't know who is morganna, aura, the epitaphs, etc, you are lost.
